US utility Florida Power & Light (FPL) will build four photovoltaic plants in 2019 in the state, generating 300MW of power in total.
The Okeechobee, Hibiscus, Echo River and Southfork plants – each 74.5MW in capacity – are all slated for commissioning in early 2020.
FPL said the new solar plants will bring an additional $26m in net savings to its customers over the long-term.
Okeechobee is being built in Okeechobee County, Hibiscus is being constructed in Palm Beach County, while Echo River is being built in Suwannee County and Southfork is being built in Manatee County.
Economic chairman of Okeechobee County Jeff Sumner said: “FPL’s investments in clean power generation continue to be a game-changer for our county.
“Investments like these provide a vital injection of economic activity to our area and help support our local community for years to come.”
Florida ranked second in the US in 2018 in solar employment, behind California, according to a recent report by The Solar Foundation.
The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity projects solar jobs to grow by more than 60% through 2026, compared to state-wide job growth of about 10%.
At peak construction, each FPL solar plant employs about 200 workers, said the utility, which estimates that 3000 jobs have been created since 2016 when it started expanding its solar capacity.
