Renewables and, in particular, wind power is ready to make a “significantly higher contribution” to Germany’s electricity supply, according to the country’s wind energy association BWE.
The BWE made the statement in response to recommendations by a government-appointed commission for ending coal-fired generation in Germany by 2038.
BWE called for the core elements of the recommendations to be made legally binding.
“We now need technology-specific development paths for renewable energies to achieve the 2030 goals of the German federal government,” said BWE president Hermann Albers.
“We need to remove regulatory hurdles so that the proven technical solutions in Power2X and storage can be implemented on an industrial scale.”
He also reiterated a call for carbon pricing for sectors not covered by the EU emissions trading scheme.
Albers added that the German renewables sector is keen to take on more responsibility and support policies to achieve clean power goals.
