Vattenfall has made the final investment decision for Danish offshore wind farm Kriegers Flak.
The 604.8MW project, in the Baltic Sea, will enter full operation before the end of 2021.
Vattenfall’s Vesterhav Syd & Nord projects, off the Danish coast in the North Sea, are still awaiting a decision by the Danish Energy Board of Appeals, which is expected to be made before the year-end.
Kriegers Flak and the Vesterhav Syd & Nord projects will have a combined capacity of 949MW and amount to a total value of €1.7 bn.
Construction of Vesterhav Syd & Nord is pending final approval from the Danish authorities, which are in turn awaiting the final decision of the appeal process.
Vattenfall plans for the two Vesterhav Syd & Nord projects to enter operation by the end of 2020.
Kriegers Flak and Vesterhav Syd & Nord will boost Vattenfall’s offshore wind production by 25%.
Vattenfall chief executive Magnus Hall said: “The investment in Kriegers Flak will significantly increase Vattenfall’s offshore capacity and is a cornerstone in our ambition to enable fossil-free living within one generation – as well as a major step in Denmark’s green transition.
“We are pleased to have reached this milestone.”
At the time of award in 2016, Kriegers Flak came at the lowest bid prices for an offshore wind project.
Vattenfall senior vice president and head of business area wind Gunnar Groebler said: “Vesterhav Syd & Nord are offshore wind farms with great potential, and we are confident that they are fully in line with the framework awarded to us by the Danish state.
“However, we find it prudent to review the result of the appeals against Vesterhav Syd before taking further steps.”
Kriegers Flak, located in the Baltic Sea, will have 72 turbines of 8.4MW each.
Combined, Vesterhav Syd & Nord will have 41 turbines of 8.4MW each and a total capacity of 344.4MW.
