Red Rock Power has acquired the 50MW Afton wind farm in East Ayrshire, Scotland, from a fund managed by InfraRed Capital Partners for an undisclosed amount.

Afton, which is Red Rock’s first onshore project, comprises 25 Siemens Gamesa 2MW turbines and sells power under a 15-year agreement with Danish trading house NEAS.

Guy Madgwick has also been appointed chief executive of Red Rock Power, which is the European subsidiary of Chinese outfit SDIC Power.

Madgwick will be responsible for steering the developer’s next phase of growth, which has seen the Edinburgh based team expand by 33% this year.

He has over 30 years of experience working within the European energy industry, including 15 years in senior leadership roles with major utilities and private companies.

He recently established his own renewables consultancy business called Freewheel Consulting.

Madgwick said: “Red Rock Power is a key player in the Scottish, UK and European renewables industry and I look forward to leading the team to further this ambition.

“Developments in the last few months are the culmination of several years of hard work by a group of dedicated and enthusiastic experts who I look forward to working with.

“Having been involved in renewable energy since 2005, I have seen the vast potential realised both onshore and off our coasts with technology and innovation exceeding all expectations.

“While we are busy with our work on Inch Cape, Afton, and Beatrice, we remain interested in growing our portfolio further. Scotland and the UK has a wealth of natural resources and we are eager to play a key role in creating affordable clean energy as we all strive towards low carbon electricity generation.”
