ABO Wind and RP Global have formed a joint venture to develop between three and five wind farms in Tanzania totalling 400MW in the next few years.
The JV, Upepo Tanzania, has already started selecting suitable project sites and collecting data via a wind measurement mast.
Pre-development is underway with the goal to bring the first wind farm to construction by 2020, Upepo said.
ABO Tanzania director Edward Koenen said: “Tanzania is a very promising new market for our company, offering excellent conditions for wind and solar development. We are looking forward to advancing a sustainable energy supply in Tanzania together with our partner RP Global.”
RP Global Africa director Leo Schiefermuller said: “Tanzania provides very good wind resources and together with our partner ABO Wind, and in close cooperation with the local communities, we are targeting the development of a larger pipeline, which shall be implemented during the next five years.
“Those projects will not only increase the renewable energy share in Tanzania, but most importantly will also reduce the cost of electricity generation in the country”.
