EDF Renewables North America Distributed Solutions is to provide an energy storage system for San Diego Zoo in California.
The 1MW battery system will be installed at the zoo in order to help mitigate spikes in usage and lower demand charges.
It will also reduce costs by recharging when energy is at its lowest available rate, and then later discharging the power to the zoo when costs are highest, EDF said.
The performance-based contract will see EDF Renewables paid only on the actual utility bill savings realised by the Zoo through the storage system.
San Diego Zoo director of performance improvement Adam Ringler said: “This is a perfect example of how we are identifying and implementing cost-effective energy and green environmental projects as a part of San Diego Zoo Global’s commitment to sustainability.
“In this case, the savings can be invested into enhancing the zoo experience, and furthering wildlife conservation and education.”
EDF Renewables director of distributed solutions Andrew Goldstone said: “We are honoured to be partnering with such a well-known and respected organization in the San Diego community.
“This is a perfect illustration of how we are bringing decades of experience and our financial stability to serve not only utilities and wholesale markets, but also end-users of energy through our Distributed Solutions group.”
