US utility-scale storage developer esVolta will install four batteries in Southern California Edison’s (SCE) territory, pending regulatory approval.
The projects, all using lithium ion technology, are expected to come online by March 2020.
EsVolta will develop, build, and operate the 3MW/12MWh Wildcat battery project near Palm Springs, as well as the three Acorn projects in Thousand Oaks, which will have a combined capacity of 6.5MW/26.5MWh.
SCE chose the four projects through its 2017 Integrated Distributed Energy Resources request for offers.
The grid batteries will add capacity at specific locations along SCE’s distribution system, enhancing reliability and avoiding more costly distribution system upgrades needed to meet future load growth. Each will provide a stack of energy and ancillary services to California’s electric grid to support the state’s transition to a cleaner and more resilient electric system.
In North America esVolta has over 450MWh of energy storage projects in operation plus a pipeline of 2000MWh of projects in development stages.
