MHI Vestas has kicked off sales of its much-anticipated 10MW turbine with commercial installations to start from 2021.
The Danish manufacturer officially broke the double-digit barrier with the V164-10MW machine via a range of relatively small upgrades to the technology.
MHI Vestas took the wraps off the new machine at the first day of the WindEnergy Hamburg 2018 conference in Germany.
“What was unreachable before has become the new benchmark,” said chief executive Philippe Kavafyan. “MHI Vestas is proud to contribute this major milestone to the offshore wind industry.”
The V164-10MW incorporates a stronger gearbox, some minor mechanical upgrades and “a small design change to enhance air flow and increase cooling in the converter”.
“The upgrades ensure that MHI Vestas can run the V164-10MW at full power at a site with wind speeds of 10 metres per second for 25 years,” said the company.
