Swedish marine energy developer Minesto has tested the functionality of its Deep Green 500kW tidal kite off the coast of north Wales at utility-scale.
The company said the device had successfully ‘flown’ in subsea trajectories at the Holyhead Deep site 8km off the coast and is now commercially viable.
Further testing will be carried out before moving to the second commissioning phase to verify the power take-off system and electricity generation, Minesto said.
Minesto chief executive Martin Edlund said: “This is a ground-breaking moment for the marine energy industry and a great accomplishment made possible by everyone that has been involved in the development of our Deep Green technology and the DG500 system now deployed in Wales.”
Meanwhile, Minesto made a loss of almost Skr4.7m (€441,000) in the first half of 2018, similar to the just over Skr4.6m loss in the same period of 2017.
The company said the result was “largely attributable to business development and administration regarding technology development and includes personnel costs and hired consultants”.
Revenue at Minesto grew slightly to just over Skr18.8m in the period, from about Skr18.6m last year.
It said revenue came mainly from “capitalised work” for its own account and “establishment support in subsidiaries”.
