A joint venture of Canadian Solar and ET Energy is to build two solar farms totalling 132MW in South Africa for independent power producer BioTherm Energy.
The JV will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the 46MW Aggeneys and 86MW Konkoonsies 2 projects in the north-west of the country.
Aggeneys and Konkoonsies 2 will cover 387 hectares in total and are slated for grid connection in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
They will comprise more than 400,000 of Canadian Solar’s 1500V CS6U-P modules on single-axis tracking systems. A total of 34 inverters will also be installed at the projects.
Construction is expected to start in September.
Canadian Solar chairman and chief executive Shawn Qu said: “These projects are the first large-scale applications of our products in Africa’s high voltage market.
“We hope to set more benchmarks for the renewable energy market in South Africa with high-quality products, advanced PV technology, and global expertise.”
