New York governor Andrew Cuomo has written to US Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke calling for support for the US state’s offshore wind initiative to develop 2.4GW of capacity by 2030.
He called on Zinke to delineate at least four new energy areas in the New York Bight recommended by the state’s Offshore Wind Master Plan.
“Instead of trying to revive the fossil fuel industry, I call on you to join us in our efforts to build a 21st century clean energy economy,” Cuomo said.
“Now is not the time for oil and gas offshore drilling, which poses an unacceptable risk to our coastal resources and our economy,” he added. “Now is the time for offshore wind.”
Cuomo urged Zinke to support NY’s offshore wind efforts. “We look forward to working with you in these next, vital steps in confirming the most optimal locations for developing wind energy areas in the New York Bight,” he said.
