The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult and RenewableUK have launched an initiative to examine how the marine energy sector can meet new tests the UK government has set for receiving support.
The three tests were announced in October as part of the Clean Growth Strategy with wave and tidal energy having to demonstrate strong carbon reductions, a clear cost reduction pathway and global market leadership potential.
ORE Catapult will work with an industry steering group to produce an ‘evidence-based’ report by the end of March 2018 outlining the potential of the sector.
The report will be passed to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, as well as the Scottish and Welsh governments.
If the tests are passed, it is hoped that the study will pave the way for greater government support, ORE Catapult and R-UK said.
ORE Catapult chief executive Andrew Jamieson said: “The UK is already leading the world in deploying the first full-scale tidal power arrays and cutting-edge wave devices.
“It’s essential that our emerging wave and tidal developers continue to enjoy investor confidence to allow them to be brought to full commercial scale, for the economic opportunity is immense.”
