Dutch company Seawind has signed an agreement with WRE Hellas to develop small-scale floating offshore wind farms in the Aegean Sea to supply Greek islands with clean power.
The partners will develop several projects using Seawind’s two-bladed turbines on floating foundations.
The structures will be supplied fully assembled and will be installed by a semi-submersible vessel, Seawind said.
The projects will consist of one or two turbines to be developed under the Clean Energy for EU Islands Programme, which aims to help islands generate their own energy.
Seawind said it is currently completing the construction of a 6.2MW demonstration project in Norway and in 2018 will be implementing the design of its 10.4MW unit with a 210-metre rotor diameter.
WRE Hellas managing director Victoria Alexandratou said: “The development of economic, clean energy sources is of vital importance for many small Greek islands that rely heavily on tourism.
“Seawind’s technology will enable us to meet this objective at a cost comparable to the wholesale price on the mainland and independent from government subsidies.”
No timelines were given for the development of the projects in the Aegean.
