Statoil has selected the name Empire Wind for the up to 1GW offshore project off the coast of New York state.
The Norwegian oil major won the December 2016 auction for the right to develop the 32,000-hectare site off the coast of Long Island with a bid of $42.5m.
The Empire Wind project team is currently conducting an evaluation process, gathering information about the seabed conditions, grid connection options and wind resources characteristic to the area, Statoil said.
Empire Wind project director Christer af Geijerstam said: “The name Empire Wind captures the pivotal role that this important project will play in helping New York achieve its ambitious renewable energy goal.
“We are committed to working with other developers, state officials, unions and the business community to develop a US supply chain for this and other offshore wind projects.”
Meanwhile, Statoil has completed the previously announced 40% acquisition of the construction ready 162MW Apodi solar plant in Brazil from fellow Norwegian company Scatec Solar.
Statoil has also bought a further 3.75% from ApodiPar, bringing its total interest in the solar project to 43.75%.
Scatec Solar holds a further 43.75%, with ApodiPar holding the remaining 12.5%.
Statoil paid a combined price of approximately $25m for the solar plant.
