Dong Energy and Vancouver outfit Naikun Wind Energy Group have signed a letter of intent that gives the Danish company exclusive rights to negotiate a joint development agreement for the 396MW Haida Energy Field offshore wind farm off British Columbia.
The project is planned for a 550-square km area in Hecate Strait, between the Haida Gwaii islands and Prince Rupert on the British Columbia mainland.
Dong said the project would feature bottom-fixed structures due to the shallow water at the project location.
The two companies will also explore possibilities for a long-term partnership.
Naikun chief executive Michael O’Connor said: “This agreement effectively connects the largest offshore wind developer in the world with a project that offers one of the strongest, most-consistent wind resources in the world.”
Dong Energy Wind Power North America president Thomas Brostrøm said: “We see this opportunity as a first step to bringing offshore wind power to Canada in what could become a strategic partnership with the nation’s front-runner project.”
