Tidal Lagoon Power has struck a grid connection agreement from National Grid for its proposed 3.24GW Cardiff project.
The agreement allows the Cardiff tidal lagoon to act as flexible load for the grid with up to 2171MW of demand permitted.
Current plans for Cardiff tidal lagoon comprise a 20.5km breakwater wall housing up to 108 turbines within at least two ‘power houses’.
The project is slated to be operational after 2025 but is contingent on TLP securing price support for its 320MW so-called pathfinder lagoon at Swansea Bay.
National Grid director of UK System Operator Phil Sheppard said: “Tidal power presents a reliable and predictable source of renewable generation that has the potential for highly flexible operation in the future.”
TLP chief executive Mark Shorrock added: “Today we have secured the grid connection for a tidal power station equal in installed capacity to Hinkley Point C.”
