Simec Energy has taken the wraps off plans for a 178MW onshore wind farm that will power industrial plants in central and Highland Scotland.
The GFG Alliance business is developing the 54-turbine Glenshero project near the former Rio Tinto aluminium smelter in Fort William, which it purchased last year.
Total investment is expected to be £170m, if approved by planners. Plants to benefit include an alloy wheels factory in Kinlochleven and the Dalzell plant in Motherwell.
Both of those facilities are owned by GFG and steel rolled at the latter could be used in a “potential new neighbouring wind tower manufacturing facility”.
GFG is also planning to enhance the existing hydro station at Kinlochleven and potentially build new plants across Lochaber.
Simec chief executive Jay Hambro said: “Glenshero is a unique project in our portfolio. It would be built in an environment of zero subsidies, using steel rolled and finished in Scotland and then generate clean energy to support the Scottish metals industry.”
