Belgian wave outfit Laminaria has raised €2m to develop its technology and deploy a full-scale demonstrator at Orkney’s European Marine Energy Centre.
The Ostend company secured the funding from Flemish investment company PMV, early-stage inter-university fund QBIC II plus existing investor Clean Energy Innovative Projects.
Laminaria plans to deploy a first eponymously-titled device from rated at around 200kW next year at EMEC’s Billia Croo site.
“After delivering proof of concept with the North Sea test campaign in 2015, demonstrating a grid connected device in the turbulent Scottish waters is the next very exciting step for Laminaria,” said chief executive Steven Nauwelaerts.
“Laminaria is a great example of a second generation technology platform that has the potential to have a vital impact on the renewable wave energy landscape,” added QBIC II managing partner Sofie Baeten.
