Lagerwey is testing its new climbing crane on a 4.5MW L136 turbine at Eemshaven in the Netherlands.
The Dutch manufacturer said it has carried out ground testing of the crane and is now examining climbing and hoisting abilities.
The crane builds the tower of the turbine and then uses the tower to ‘climb’ upwards, Lagerwey said.
“This solves the problem of the large transport and long construction times of the giant cranes needed to build the ever-increasing wind turbines,” the company said.
It added that the testing will take several weeks.
In October, Lagerwey plans to use the crane to install a second L136 machine at Eemshaven.
