GeoSea is renting UK outfit Houlder’s pile lifting tool for installation work at Vattenfall’s 406.7MW Horns Rev 3 offshore wind farm off the coast of Denmark.
Houlder marine equipment director James Russell said the tool’s remote controlled hook-up and release system engages directly with a foundation pile’s flange.
“This eliminates the need for additional lifting points or straps – the optimal solution where the lifting point overhangs the deck of the installation vessel or is out of reach,” he said.
Russell added that for the Horns Rev project the unit will be configured to lift 6.5-metre diameter monopiles, weighing up to 690 tonnes.
“Options are available for larger and heavier piles in future,” he said.
The project will feature 49 MHI Vestas V164 8MW turbines, optimised to 8.3MW.
