ABB has won a $30m order from ScottishPower Renewables to supply technology to the 714MW East Anglia 1 offshore wind farm off the UK’s Suffolk coast.
The Swiss company will supply two SVC light static compensators (Statcoms) that will smooth out the voltage fluctuations created by intermittent wind energy.
ABB said the Statcoms will increase “power transfer capability, improve power quality and enhance grid stability, enabling more energy efficient and reliable power supplies for millions of consumers”.
It will also incorporate TrafoStar autotransformers into the two Statcom systems.
ABB grid integration business head Patrick Fragman said: “ABB’s advanced Statcom and transformer technologies will not only help stabilise voltage fluctuations and enhance power capacity but also improve the quality and reliability of renewable wind energy supplies to millions of people.”
