The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has given approval to Xcel Energy’s plans for seven wind farms totalling 1.55GW across the US upper Midwest.
The wind farms will be located in Iowa, Minnesota and North and South Dakota and are expected to be operational by the end of 2020.
The projects are the 200MW Freeborn scheme, which will be developed by Invenergy, the Blazing Star 1&2 wind farms – both 200MW – to be developed by Geronimo Energy in Lincoln county and the 100MW Lake Benton facility to be developed by a NextEra Energy subsidiary.
NextEra Energy Resources will develop the 150MW Foxtail project in North Dakota and the 600MW Crowned Ridge wind farm in South Dakota.
Xcel will own 300MW of the Crowned Ridge project on build own transfer basis and purchase the other 300MW from NextEra.
Allete Clean Energy will develop the 100MW Clean Energy 1 project in North Dakota, with Xcel buying the power.
