Enel Green Power RSA has started commercial operations at the 111MW Gibson Bay wind farm in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
The project, which is located in Kouga Municipality, is capable of generating around 420 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year, the company said.
It is supported by a 20-year power supply agreement with South African utility Eskom, as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme tender promoted by the country’s government.
Enel now has more than 520MW of wind and solar plants in operation in South Africa.
Enel country manager in South Africa William Price said: “Gibson Bay is the second wind farm we have brought to life in South Africa, our first being Nojoli, further demonstrating our commitment to a low-carbon energy future.”
