Denmark’s government-appointed Energy Commission has recommended phasing out renewables subsidies at the same rate that the technology becomes commercially viable.
It also called for a smart energy system to integrate renewables, maintain a high level of security of supply and provide new growth areas for exports.
The policy changes should be implemented as early as 2020 in order for the country to meet 2050 goals for a low-carbon society, the commission added.
Energy Commission chairman Niels Christiansen said: “Concluding the work of the Energy Commission, it is obvious to us that an ambitious energy policy starting as early as 2020 is mandatory if we are to meet our long-term objective of a low-emissions society based on renewable energy in 2050.”
The recommendations were delivered in a report to the Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate Lars Lilleholt.
The government will now consider the proposals as part of process to define the next phase of Denmark’s green energy transition.
