Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences has been awarded two grants worth a total £230,000 to study ocean turbulence to help improve the design and operation of tidal devices.
The academic institution will work with ADCP specialist Nortek and marine renewables survey company Partrac following the cash from UK research and skills agencies.
The first project will focus on the collection of novel turbulence data in the Menai Strait, and also further offshore to the northwest of Anglesey.
Bangor University said this would further develop the expertise in acoustic and optical observation techniques pioneered there.
The second project will focus on advancing the measurement of turbulence in energetic tidal flows, with researchers also working in the “natural laboratory” of the Menai strait, it added.
The research will be executed as two related projects supported by grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarships.
