Six renewable energy lobby groups, including RenewableUK, have called on the UK government to make green energy a key plank of its new industrial strategy.
The groups were responding to Westminster’s call for submissions ahead of the formulation of the policy.
RenewableUK said its document demonstrated that the wind, wave and tidal industries are providing economic benefits to UK regions, some in need of new growth opportunities.
The group also sent a joint letter with the five other trade associations to BEIS secretary Greg Clark arguing that low carbon energy sources are now a low cost option. The other signatories include Scottish Renewables, Renewable Energy Association, Solar Trade Association, Regen and the Electricity Storage Network.
In a separate statement, REA said that many renewable technologies are now competitive with, or more competitive with fossil fuels such as natural gas.
“From innovation and skills to the potential to export both products and knowledge, renewables and clean tech can support the nation in advancing a wide range of interests, while developing infrastructure fit for the 21st century,” REA policy analyst Mark Sommerfeld said.
