The Port of Taichung has been selected as the main hub to support the expansion of offshore wind farms off Taiwan’s western seaboard.
According to the port, Taichung was chosen as the hub by Taiwan’s central government, the ministry of economic affairs, a Taiwan-Denmark consortium and other business organisations following a review.
It added that the port is in close proximity to several proposed wind farm developments off the coast of Changhua, south of Taichung City.
The port also has deepwater access and can accommodate large commercial vessels.
It is upgrading heavy cargo wharves 5A, 5B and 106 to support wind farm rollout and has designated 100 hectares of land and new road construction for a $92m national industrial park for the turbine components industry.
The port said it also is looking for domestic and overseas offshore wind turbine businesses to set up operations at Taichung.
Taiwan has set a goal to expand offshore wind development to 3GW by 2025.
