Dutch outfit Eneco has teamed up with Mitsubishi to develop a 48MW battery system in northern Germany to supply sustainable reserve capacity for the power grid.
The EnspireME storage project in Jardelund near the Danish border will be Europe’s largest battery system when completed before the end of the year, the companies said.
The lithium-ion system, with a capacity of over 50 megawatt-hours, will be supplied and integrated by NEC Energy Solutions. Construction will start in summer.
Eneco and Mitsubishi will start a pilot project to connect nearby wind farms to the system, allowing the facilities to feed the batteries whenever there is surplus capacity or an overload on the grid.
The pilot project has the support of Schleswig-Holstein, a German state that transmits power from large wind farms to other parts of the country.
