CS Wind is to cut its 154-strong UK workforce by around a third due to the slowdown of the country’s onshore wind sector.
The Korean company said consultation with unions kicked off last week ahead of staff reductions to 100 at its Campbeltown wind turbine tower facility.
A spokesman said: “The current UK energy policy has resulted in a slow-down of development of onshore wind projects. It has also driven a reduction in prices resulting in increasing imports of wind towers from overseas.
“These factors have forced the company to consider every possible option to remain competitive to cope with market changes to ensure the long term future for the facility and the workforce.”
CS said the decision to “reshape and resize” its Machrihanish facility was “difficult but inevitable”.
The company said it will focus on supporting affected colleagues “through this difficult period of restructuring”.
CS has ongoing supply deals with companies including Community Windpower and EDF and has worked with Senvion, EWT and others.
