Renewables have a “huge role” to play in the future of the Scotland’s energy sector, according to the country’s energy minister Paul Wheelhouse.
He was speaking in Glasgow this morning at the Scottish Renewables offshore wind conference, ahead of the publication of Scotland’s draft energy plan this afternoon.
Wheelhouse (pictured) appealed to delegates to consult on the draft plan and said he is “determined” to ensure a role for offshore wind in the country’s future energy mix.
He said the draft policy will set out Holyrood’s plan to 2050, with a particular focus on the period to 2032.
The plan will establish a “whole system view” including heat, transport and electricity with an “emphasis” on smart local energy solutions, the minister said.
The policy also aims to maximise economic, social and environmental benefits, he added, and renewables has an “advantage” to deliver community and economic benefits.
