Investigators are trying to determine what caused a Northern Power turbine to catch fire at the 60.2MW Stoney Corners wind project in Michigan.
Fire broke out on 20 December at one of the two prototype direct drive 2.1MW turbines at the project owned by Heritage Sustainable Energy, operations vice-president Rick Wilson told reNEWS.
“All three blades burned and fell to ground,” Wilson said. “Clean up and recovery are under way.”
The safety system shut down the turbine and there were no injuries.
Stoney Corners wind farm was built in three phases with the first two turbines coming online in 2008. The facility also features 25 Senvion MM92 2MW machines.
