GE is set to install Saudi Arabia’s first utility-scale wind power turbine for Saudi Aramco.
The company has delivered a 2.75-120 machine and expects to commission it next month at a so-called bulk plant in Turaif, in the northwest of the country.
The demonstration project has been developed by Saudi Aramco in partnership with GE to highlight the viability of deploying wind power in the kingdom, Saudi Aramco said.
Wind energy will become a key source of electricity in the country due to its plans to install 9.5GW of clean energy by 2023, according to the company.
“With the arrival of the first GE wind turbine in the Kingdom, we are demonstrating our strong commitment to support the aim of diversifying the energy mix”, GE president for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain Hisham Albahkali said.
“This is a momentous occasion as it highlights that wind energy generation in the kingdom is real and heralds a new era of renewable energy that clearly shows the world that action is being taken to support the renewable goals of Saudi Vision 2030.”
