More than 100,000 people are now employed in the clean energy sector in Massachusetts, an increase of 75% since 2010, according to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC).
In its ‘2016 Massachusetts Clean Energy Industry Report’, MassCEC said currently 105,212 people are working in renewable energy – growing 6% between 2015 and 2016.
This represents 2.9% of the overall workforce in the US state, the report said.
It added that clean energy is an $11.8bn industry in the US state, representing 2.5% of its gross state product.
The report, which was prepared for MassCEC by BW Research Partnership, also found Massachusetts to be the national leader in early-stage clean energy investment.
Overall, public and private investment in the industry exceeded $658m, it said.
The state has set targets for utilities to buy approximately 1.2GW of hydro power and 1.6GW of electricity from offshore wind.
