SSE has submitted a paper to the Scottish government with six proposals for the country’s emerging energy strategy, including the repowering and extension of existing onshore wind farms.
The aim is to optimise Scotland’s energy resources and expertise, de-carbonise the system and put communities at the centre of new investment, SSE said.
Other proposals include maximising opportunities for large-scale pumped hydro storage schemes and supporting community investment and ownership of energy projects.
The company said that heat use in Scotland could be decarbonised through increased use of district heating and improvements to the stock of electric storage heaters.
Household fuel poverty could be tackled through improved energy efficiency measures, it added.
“The Scottish government’s new energy strategy comes at the right time and can help enable Scotland to maximise benefits from innovation, cost reductions and new technologies,” SSE said.
“This could mean major improvements for the energy system and make a positive difference to energy consumers across Scotland,” the company added.
