Siemens has won a contract to deliver two HVDC converter stations for an electricity interconnector between Germany and Belgium, which will help reduce grid bottlenecks for renewable energy.
The €273m deal, with German transmission operator Amprion and its Belgian equivalent Elia, also includes a five-year maintenance agreement.
The Aachen Liege Electricity Grid Overlay (ALEGrO) project will connect the two countries electricity systems via a 90km underground cable.
The converter stations will convert AC to DC and then back to DC.
Siemens will design, supply, install and commission the converter stations.
ALEGrO is scheduled for commercial operations in 2020.
