Gamesa has added a lithium battery to its first energy system targeting areas in Spain without grid access.
The Spanish company has installed the battery, which can store 429kW of electricity, at the prototype it opened earlier this year in La Muela in Aragon.
The 2MW system also comprises a G52-850kW wind turbine, 816 solar panels with 245kW each and three 222-kW diesel generators.
It also includes control software custom-developed by Gamesa to facilitate the integration of the four technologies.
The prototype is the first to market enabling the ad-hoc combination of each of the technologies installed depending on specific project requirements, according to the company.
“The start-up of the lithium battery is an important step in the development of Gamesa’s offgrid proposition,” Gamesa managing director of corporate development David Mesonero said.
“The production of power by combining these four sources will bring down the cost of electricity in remote locations without grid access, as well as generating cleaner energy.”
