US developers are building or about to install 20.3GW of wind capacity across the country as the technology keeps gaining momentum, according to AWEA.
The near-record pipeline of projects was boosted in the third quarter of the year by 2501MW of new construction announcements and another 1216MW entering advanced development, the US wind association said.
Projects with a combined 895MW were installed in the quarter across seven US states, taking installations this year to 1725MW.
AWEA also said power purchase agreements for wind farms have reached 3193MW so far this year, a 39% increase compared with the same period of 2015.
“To put the 20GW of wind capacity under development in perspective, consider that the entire US wind fleet just recently passed 75GW,” AWEA chief executive Tom Kiernan said.
“This enormous growth reflects what we hear from states, utilities and Fortune 500 companies all the time – wind power is increasingly their first choice for energy.”
