Statkraft has opened the upgraded Nedre Røssåga hydro plant in Norway, boosting capacity to 350MW from 250MW previously.
The power station will now produce 2.15TWh of electricity per year, equivalent to 1.6% of Norway’s total generation, the company said.
The Nkr2bn refurbishment and expansion of Nedre Røssåga started in spring 2012.
Three of the existing units have been rehabilitated, while a further three have been decommissioned and replaced by a new power station with one large unit, Statkraft said.
A total of 19 km of new tunnels were dug during the work, which at peak employed 300 people, the company added.
Nedre Røssåga is located in Hemnes municipality.
