Xcel Energy has received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to more than double its renewable energy portfolio by up to 1.5GW.
The utility plans for its electricity supply to the upper Midwest US to be 63% carbon free by 2030.
Xcel Energy-Minnesota president Chris Clark said: “This outcome allows us to invest even more in wind, giving customers more renewable energy options.”
Xcel Energy will move away from coal-fired generation by investing in wind, solar and natural gas.
The company plans to retire two coal units at its Sherburne County generating plant and move “forward the planning to identify the energy resources needed to best meet customers’ needs for power reliability”.
