Dong Energy’s Studstrup combined heat and power station in Aarhus started using wood pellets instead of coal to generate electricity on 10 October.
The facility, which took two years to convert and cost about Dkr1.3bn, is supplying district heating to the city and the surrounding area.
Dong added that a new biomass-fuelled CHP plant will come online soon at Lisbjerg also supplying district heating to Aarhus.
Both projects are expected to contribute to the city’s 2016–2020 climate plan, Dong said.
