Transmission system operator TenneT has held a topping out ceremony at the onshore converter station for the 900MW Borwin3 offshore wind grid connection in Emden/Ost in the German state of Lower Saxony.
Groundwork at the 22,500 square metre facility started in May, while commissioning of the Siemens-built HVDC converter is slated for late summer next year.
Burial of a 30km DC onshore cable from Hamswehrum to the planned onshore substation in Emden/Ost started in March.
In September, the first parts of the offshore cable were buried and Drydocks World started steel cutting for the offshore platform Borwin gamma in Dubai, on behalf of the consortium of Siemens and Petrofac.
TenneT awarded Siemens the contract to supply HVDC transmission technology for the grid link in 2015.
Consortium partner Petrofac is handling construction and installation of the offshore platform some 130km off the German coast.
Borwin3 is expected to be fully commissioned on 5 July 2019. It will connect the 500MW Hohe See and 400MW Global Tech 1 offshore wind farms to the grid.
