US developer Apex Clean Energy is sounding out landowners about participating in a 150MW greenfield project in Michigan.
“We’re looking to lease up to 20,000 acres,” Apex public affairs manager Dan Blondeau told reNEWS.
The Galien Oaks wind farm in Berrien County would feature 30 to 40 turbines.
The area’s verified wind resource, existing transmission lines, expansive private land and proximity to state highways attracted Apex to the site.
“There are many steps in the development process, and we’re still early in the stage,” said Blondeau. “It’s too soon to know if the project is feasible.”
The Virginia developer plans to gather community input, conduct studies and undertake engineering and permitting work.
“This typically takes several years, which means construction is unlikely before 2019,” said Blondeau.
Apex estimates it will cost about $250m to develop and build the Galien Oaks scheme, which will generate about $7m in taxes over the project’s life.
Power will be delivered into the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s electrical grid.
