Nova Innovation has produced power from a pair of 100kW tidal turbines in the waters of Shetland in what it called a “world first”.
The device developer said the two-unit Bluemill installation is the “first offshore tidal array in the world to deliver electricity to the grid”.
The second machine was installed earlier this month.
Nova said the success “hearlds a new era for tidal energy as a long-term source of predictable renewable power”.
The initial M-100 turbine (pictured) was installed off Shetland in March. Belgian company Elsa is a partner in the project.
Nova managing director Simon Forrest said: “Deploying the second turbine truly sets us apart and showcases our technology. I would like to thank all our staff, partners and suppliers for helping to make our vision a reality.”
