Dong Energy has hired eight local technicians to start laying wind turbine foundations for the 573MW Race Bank wind farm off the Norfolk coast.
The offshore wind farm, due to come online in 2018, will have 91 Siemens 6MW turbines supported by Bilfinger-made foundations.
Work is also beginning on the second of two offshore substations, which will link each turbine to transmission cables, Dong said.
The technicians will live for up to two weeks at a time on an accommodation vessel that can hold up to 100 people.
“It’s fantastic to have eight local technicians being part of this vital stage of construction,” Dong Energy’s Jason Ledden said. “They have been trained to the highest standards for working offshore and have a crucial role to play.”
The first substation topside and jacket were installed by Seaway Heavy Lifting vessel Oleg Strashnov and fabricated by by Iemants and Engie Fabricom. The second jacket and topside are expected to be loaded out in early 2017.
