Indian power company Tata Power said the construction of new wind farms in India and Africa was behind a near 9% expansion in its total generation capacity in the first quarter to 9432MW.
Tata pinned the increase on the completion of the 44MW Lahori wind farm in Madhy Pradesh and its Cennergi joint venture in South Africa achieving commercial operations at its 134MW Amakhal Emoyeni and 95MW Tsitsikamma wind farms.
Cennergi is a 50-50 joint venture between Tata Power and South Africa’s Exxaro.
“We have, in this quarter, spread our footprint across the country, also commissioned plants in international geographies with a special focus on renewables,” Tata Power managing director Anil Sardan said.
Tata Power is India’s largest integrated power producer, with extensive interests in coal-fired generation. It also claims to be one of the largest renewable energy players in India with a clean energy portfolio spanning wind, solar, hyrdo and thermal of 1996MW, which now equates to around 21% of its total generation capacity.
