Canadian developer Algonquin Power plans to build 26 Siemens 3.2MW-113 turbines.
The project includes a 34.5kV/115kV substation and a 4.5km underwater cable to the mainland. It will connect to the Hydro One distribution system.
Amherst Island is located in Lake Ontario, about 15km southwest of Kingston.
The developer expects final development and construction to take 12 to 18 months.
The C$272.5m wind farm is expected to start commercial operation in 2018 and produce about 235 GWh/yr.
Amherst Island holds a 20-year feed-in tariff power purchase agreement with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator.
