Mainstream Renewable Power has been awarded contracts for seven wind farms totalling 986MW by the National Energy Commission of Chile.
The Chilean tender was seven times oversubscribed with 84 companies submitting 85,000GWh of bids for just over 12,000GWh of available power, Mainstream said.
It said the seven projects, which are located throughout Chile, will represent investments totalling $1.65bn.
The wind farms are expected to be supplying electricity to the grid for 20 years from January 2021.
The tender was the first in Chile that Mainstream had participated independently and all projects are 100% owned by the Irish renewable energy company.
Mainstream has over 2GW of wind and solar energy projects in the country and through its joint venture with Actis has an additional 300MW of wind due to start construction this year.
Mainstream chief executive Eddie O’Connor said: “We had the industry foresight to take early positions in Chile and South Africa and we are rolling-out similar plans across Africa, Central America and Asia.”
