The offshore substation for Iberdrola’s 350MW Wikinger wind farm set sail at the weekend from Spain for the project site in the German Baltic Sea.
The substation, which was built by Navantia at the Puerto Real shipyard in Cadiz, is the first to include two topsides and to use a six-legged pre-piled jacket.
The journey from Spain to the German zone of the Baltic Sea will take about three weeks, Iberdrola said.
The substation will also be used by the electricity system operator 50Hertz to support further offshore wind developments, the company said.
Construction of the 4550-tonne double topside supported 700 jobs, it added.
Wikinger will consist of 70 5MW Adwen turbines and is scheduled to go online at the end of 2017.
