Cambridge wave developer Trident Energy is to design a second generation of its linear generator technology following a detailed review of its PowerPod concept.
Trident said the linear generator would be redesigned following the review and optimisation by Cambridgeshire consultancy 42 Technology.
The new concept is similar in size to its predecessor but would generate 50% more electrical power on each stroke, it added.
The magnetic stack configuration has been optimised to allow the linear generator to operate horizontally, widening the available options for installation and operation.
Improvements will also be made to the seal design for marine operation and a more robust bearing solution to increase reliability and reduce maintenance cycles.
“The design improvements and project outcomes have exceeded expectations and the two companies are now progressing to detailed design of the new linear generator technology,” said Trident chief executive Steve Packard.
The development forms part of Trident’s WaveDrive project, which was awarded around £500,000 from Wave Energy Scotland under its power take-off innovation call.
