Statkraft has started testing a new 225MW unit for the Nedre Røssåga hydropower plant in Norway.
The company said the new unit will replace three of the original six at the old power station, once the three-month test period is complete.
Statkraft has spent the last three years building a new powerhouse for the hydro plant next to the old one in Nordland.
The other three old units in the old power station have already been upgraded, and total installed capacity at the plant will increase by 100MW to 350MW following the testing.
Planning of the new power station started in 2010, with construction beginning in January 2013, Statkraft said.
In addition to the powerhouse, the project also includes 19km of new tunnels.
The upgrade will allow the plant to generate electricity for another 50 years, the company said.
